The Challenge of Staying Sharp

Have you ever driven through thick fog at night? Your eyes strain to see further than possible. Your hands grip the wheel, ready for anything that might dart across the road. That kind of tense alertness is exhausting. You can’t maintain it forever.

Joshua understood this. Israel had stayed sharp through years of battle, but now the fighting was largely behind them. Would they stay faithful when life settled down? Would they keep their edge after Joshua was dead and gone?

Joshua’s farewell message in chapter 23 is clear. God has been faithful in the past, and His people must remain faithful in the future. The chapter unfolds in three parts: anticipating God’s help, following His terms and conditions, and considering the alternative if they turn away.

Godly Conviction: How Sin, Shame, and Repentance Restore the Heart

The apostle Paul’s letters to the Corinthians give us a remarkable picture of Godly conviction, repentance, and restoration. In his third letter to Corinth (known as the severe letter), Paul used strong, confronting language to reveal the sin in the church. His words were painful, but his goal was never condemnation—it was love. The Corinthians felt a crushing weight of grief and shame. Paul’s heart was burdened by their sin, and he even expressed regret for having to rebuke a church he deeply loved.

The Gift Every Christian Receives at Salvation

When someone trusts in Jesus Christ, something miraculous happens. Not only are our sins forgiven, but new life takes root within us. The Holy Spirit Himself comes to dwell inside us (1 Cor 3:16).

This is not a “second blessing” for the spiritually elite. It is the immediate gift of salvation—every Christian receives the Spirit the moment they believe. And with the Spirit comes something deeply personal: a spiritual gift.
