Gripped by Grace

When Joshua gathered Israel at Shechem in Joshua 24:1–13, it wasn’t just another meeting. It was sacred. This was the very place where God promised Abraham the land, where Jacob built an altar, and now, where the nation of Israel stood before God’s presence to be reminded of His faithfulness.

Joshua gives them a history lesson that I like to call “The Miracle of Israel.” This lesson does not glorify Israel’s strength, but it magnifies God’s grace. And if we listen closely, it’s a lesson we need just as much today.

Why Our Church Is Independent

When people first visit, they often ask: “So, who’s in charge here? Do you report to a denomination?”

It’s a good question. The short answer is: no, we are an independent (or autonomous) church. That simply means we make decisions locally, rather than being directed by a denominational hierarchy.

But here’s the deeper question: why would a church want to do that? Isn’t that risky? Isn’t it safer to have someone “above” us to keep us in line?

The Challenge of Staying Sharp

Have you ever driven through thick fog at night? Your eyes strain to see further than possible. Your hands grip the wheel, ready for anything that might dart across the road. That kind of tense alertness is exhausting. You can’t maintain it forever.

Joshua understood this. Israel had stayed sharp through years of battle, but now the fighting was largely behind them. Would they stay faithful when life settled down? Would they keep their edge after Joshua was dead and gone?

Joshua’s farewell message in chapter 23 is clear. God has been faithful in the past, and His people must remain faithful in the future. The chapter unfolds in three parts: anticipating God’s help, following His terms and conditions, and considering the alternative if they turn away.
