A Special Gift

The Gift Every Christian Receives at Salvation

When someone trusts in Jesus Christ, something miraculous happens. Not only are our sins forgiven, but new life takes root within us. The Holy Spirit Himself comes to dwell inside us (1 Cor 3:16).

This is not a “second blessing” for the spiritually elite. It is the immediate gift of salvation—every Christian receives the Spirit the moment they believe. And with the Spirit comes something deeply personal: a spiritual gift.

What Are Spiritual Gifts and Why Do They Matter?

Scripture teaches that every believer is entrusted with a gift designed to serve others (Rom 12:6–8). Some gifts are public and visible—like preaching or evangelism. Others are quieter but no less essential—like administration, encouragement, or the simple gift of helps.

Most of us, in fact, probably exercise the gift of helps. It’s the Spirit-given ability to notice a need and quietly step in. It might look like preparing a meal for a struggling family, offering a ride, writing a note of encouragement, or simply being present for someone who feels alone.

In God’s kingdom, these small acts are never insignificant. They are the Spirit at work through you.

Why Every Believer’s Gift Is Essential

The beauty of the church is that no one is overlooked. Paul reminds us that the church is like a body—every part matters. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you” (1 Cor 12:21).

In the same way, your gift is indispensable to the church. The church doesn’t flourish because a few pastors do everything. It flourishes when ordinary believers, empowered by the Spirit, bring their gifts into the life of the community.

Think about it: every hug offered, every prayer whispered, every act of service is a way God builds His church. What seems small to us is weighty in heaven (Matt 25:40–45).

How Do You Discover and Use Your Gift?

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to take a test or wait for a mystical experience to know your gift. Start with this simple question: Where do I see a need, and how can I meet it?

More often than not, your spiritual gift reveals itself in the very act of serving. As you step into opportunities to bless others, you’ll notice patterns of joy, fruitfulness, and affirmation. That’s often how God makes it clear.

The Spirit Builds the Church Through You

We all need to be reminded that Christianity is not about working harder to earn God’s favor—it’s about responding to the grace we’ve already received. The same is true here.

You don’t use your gift to prove yourself. You use it because Christ has already given Himself for you. The Spirit now works in you, through your unique personality and circumstances, to bless others.

And so the question is not, Do I have a gift? You do. The real question is, Will I offer it in love?

The church of Jesus Christ is built not by a handful of gifted leaders, but by countless men and women who, in Spirit-filled humility, say: Here I am, Lord. Use me.
